A directory
that behaves like a search engine
QAZ.com
uses what is believed to be a unique 'concatenated addressing' system
to specify which QAZ topic the user is shown. The addressing system
offers a very sophisticated, and yet greatly simplified, method
of finding information by linking the topic to the Internet address
(known as a URL).
Simply by typing in cd.QAZ.com, users will go straight to the CD
page; video.QAZ.com will go straight to the video page; job.QAZ.com
will go straight to the jobs page and so on.
At
launch there are more than 100 individual QAZ topics covering everything
from birth to death and love to hate. Some 600 similes are used
(so estateagent.QAZ.com will deliver people to the property.QAZ.com
site, for instance). A similar system delivers users to the relevant
topics if a specific heading is not implemented. So, for example,
dog.QAZ.com delivers users to pet.QAZ.com. (See below for a partial
list of QAZ topics).
Together
these similes and sub topics produce a unique addressing system
allowing users to specify the reason for coming to the site without
having to go via a redundant home page. Missed hits are logged so
that new sections and similes can be added as necessary.
The
concatenated addressing structure was developed by InfaDotNet (www.infa.net),
a US- based Internet technology consultancy. Based on sophisticated
server processing, the concatenated addressing system was designed
from the ground up by Jim van Johns.
Behind
the scenes QAZ.com also performs some clever programming tricks.
It uses a highly flexible content management system, which enables
employees from Manchester, London, Bristol and other locations to
create, edit and publish content on the site. Created as a bespoke
package for QAZ.com by London-based DDPlus, the content management
system allows new reviewers and editors to be added easily. All
they need is Internet Explorer and password access. This system
will be used in the international development of QAZ.com.
